In Durham Region, rubber surfacing laid over a pool deck, patio, step, walkway, driveway or garage floor that already exists commonly costs $8 to $16 a square foot. Playgrounds are poured far deeper, so they cost $15 to $30 a square foot and sometimes more. Depth, colour, binder, the state of the slab and the size of the job all shift the figure, and there is a minimum charge on small jobs. Outdoor rubber surfacing needs the surface above about ten degrees and dry, and it cannot be rained on while it cures, which puts the outdoor season in Whitby between the last week of April and mid-October. Indoor jobs, such as garage floors, basement gyms and barn aisles, go in all year.
EPDM is new rubber, coloured through the whole granule and steady in sunlight, so it goes on any surface that shows. SBR is ground from old tires, black and lower in cost, and it goes into cushion layers under playgrounds and black floors in garages and gyms. TPV is a newer coloured granule some installers use in place of EPDM.
Pool decks, patios, steps, walkways and driveways get between three-eighths and half an inch of rubber. Garage floors and gym floors get thicker, three-eighths of an inch up to three-quarters. A playground can get anything from one and a half inches up past four, depending on how high the equipment stands.
New rubber surfacing takes feet the day after it is poured. Cars, racks, horses and heavy use wait two to three days. Thick playground pours are kept clear a little longer, and we confirm the date before we leave.
Stamped concrete, plain concrete, asphalt, interlock and pavers, wood decks, packed stone and older rubber can all take rubber surfacing on top. Whatever is underneath must be solid, clean and dry, with sealer, paint and oil removed. It is not torn out; it becomes the base.
Rubber surfacing is flexible and moves with the slab, so hairline and static cracks vanish beneath it. A crack that widens every spring must be repaired before the pour, or the rubber will eventually tear along it. Our visit sorts one from the other.
Hose it or sweep it. Mild detergent handles spills, and harsh solvents are the only thing to keep off it. A plastic-edged shovel handles snow, and road salt does not scale it. Every several years a new coat of binder keeps it sealed and extends its life.
How high the equipment stands decides the depth. A low toddler structure needs cushion about one and a half inches deep; a tall climber can call for four inches or beyond. Each zone of the playground gets its own thickness in the quote.
A site visit is usually booked within the week, and the written quote follows it. Once the weather window is open, a typical home job is one or two days of work on site. Larger playgrounds and commercial floors take longer and are scheduled in the quote.
